Lovely decision. Where is the action?

So, you have made a decision.

Lovely. Has the rest of your week been informed?

“I have decided to build my business” sounds very convincing on a quiet Sunday evening. You have a hot coffee, a beautiful fresh notebook and a wildly optimistic, completely unreasonable idea of how much you can do before Friday.

Then Wednesday arrives. The kids need you, urgent work piles up, you are properly exhausted, and that beautiful notebook is somewhere under a very unglamorous pile of laundry.

You meant it, though. That is the thing.

I think of putting a decision into practice as having two parts: choosing your direction, then acting on that choice. You can be completely serious about the first and still find the second painfully difficult.

Research supports that gap. Webb and Sheeran’s 2006 review of 47 experiments found that strengthening intentions produced a smaller change in actual behaviour.

Another 2006 review, by Gollwitzer and Sheeran, covering 94 independent tests, found that specific plans for when, where and how to act helped people achieve their goals.

So yes, those boring, deeply unsexy practical details deserve a little attention.

To put a decision into practice, connect it to specific, manageable actions:

“I want to be more present with my kids” becomes “My phone stays in the kitchen while we play after dinner.”

“I want to grow my business” becomes “Before opening Instagram on Tuesday morning, I will follow up with three potential clients.” Instagram will survive the brief, heartbreaking separation.

“I want to get stronger” becomes “On Monday and Thursday, I will go straight to the gym after school drop-off.”

Now you know what to actually do when a messy, inconvenient Wednesday happens.

And honestly? I would try keeping the big, exciting announcement to yourself for a month. Tell the people whose support you need, then give yourself time to do the quiet, sometimes frustrating work.

You can announce what you have done later.

You will have something a little more interesting to share than another wildly ambitious Sunday thought.
